Dr. Winn Sams
Chiropractic Physician

I have a unique blend of education and experiences that are sorely needed in this day and time, yet I don’t  want to be seen as a politician but more as your advocate. I have had so many experiences where I have been not heard, promised things that never materialized and have seen the good, bad and the ugly of our legislative systems on the state and federal levels (even those who represent my district).

As a healthcare provider, I am trained to listen and treat all of my patients as important and valued, as they should be. Our healthcare system is broken, yet we keep trying to throw the same “fixes” at our issues and call them change. I have experienced the heartbreaking effects of the opioid issue in my own family. Our environment is incredibly unhealthy, but it seems like our lawmakers keep turning a blind eye. Our legislators cater to the bidding of outside interest groups/agencies/associations and have lost the purpose of why they were elected.

  • Graduated from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill in 1981 with a B.A. in Economics.

  • Graduated from the National Association of Paralegal Training in 1981 with an emphasis in corporate law.

  • Started Sherman College of Chiropractic in 1999 as a single mother with 3 young daughters aged 7, 4 and 2.

  • Graduated from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 2002 summa cum laude and valedictorian.

  • Health advocate on federal and state levels for over 12 years.

  • Have written resolutions addressing the health impacts of too heavy of a backpack. 8 states have currently passed this resolution to bring awareness/education in schools.

  • Created heavy backpack white board video to be shown in schools.

  • Created LIF (Least Invasive First) as a digital communication tool for patients to share with their doctors/hospital important medical information that is usually not asked for in a regular intake session, but crucial to know.

  • Attended and presented research on LIF in 2017, first chiropractor to be invited, at the Geneva Patient Centered Medicine Conference. Conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland and was hosted by the World Health Organization.

  • Wrote legislation using a least invasive approach first concept before an opioid, to address pain management. Has been passed in West Virginia, Delaware, California and Indiana. Bills were introduced in New Hampshire, North Carolina and South Dakota.

  • All bills and resolutions were introduced/passed without any major groups support or money/favors changing hands. Achieved purely from lots of phone calls and finding the right person to champion the cause.

  • HR6 (Pres. Trump passed this bill in 10/2018) uses language from the opioid bills, calling for states to implement least invasive approaches first before an opioid.

  • Attended event in Washington, D.C. in March 2019 to empower HR6 support among legislators by encouraging them to join a newly formed integrative health congressional caucus.

  • Ran for Congress (House of Representatives) as an unaffiliated candidate for NC's District 11 in 2020. Required to obtain over 8,000 signatures to get on general ballot. With redistricting in December 2019, there was not enough time to rebrand and get the 8,000 signature quota.
